Farshi Pajama is a traditional Pakistani dress which consists of kurta, dupatta and pajama (flowing two legged skirt held by drawstrings). The, pajama falls straight to the ankles from where it starts flaring flowing abundantly onto floor. Over the time Pakistani farshi pajama have gone through various transitions from traditional to contemporary ones.
If we look into the history of farshi pajama, it was worn in the 17th and early 20th century by Muslim ladies of North India. In that era it was called, farshi gharara. The word, farshi means floor, so the trailing of pajama on the floor is referred as farshi pajama.
While walking, farshi pajama is correctly held in such a way, that a Pakistani lady carefully folds the flaring trail and holds it in her left hand keeping the right one free, it hardly trails. This Pakistani dress is usually embroidered in gold work and sterling silver wire threads.
There are many Pakistani fashion designers like HSY, Maria B, and Nilofer Shahid who have introduced this Pakistani dress with little variations on wedding and formal occasions. All of them try to emphasis on the right combination of resplendent colours, floral embroidery and stunning styles. They use a wide variety of fabrics, including silks, nets, cotton, tissues, organza, georgette and chiffon.
In Pakistan, one can simply visit the local clothing store or local tailor and has a Pakistani farshi pajamas made to order. People outside Pakistan can order Pakistani dress over the net. The prices of Pakistani dress ranges from Rupees 35000 and above. Pakistani farshi pajama is very popular among the new-age generation. The charm of this Pakistani dress gives a very mesmerizing look to the wearer. This astounding Pakistani dress which has a trailing flare from the knee onwards, provide a full skirt like look symbolizes dignity and pride. Pakistani farshi pajama embodies one of the richest patterns of art. It comes in rich fabric such as crepe, satin, chiffon, georgette and silk.
It comes in different colours like red, white, green, yellow, magenta blue purples etc. Red farshi pajamas are in high demand by the Pakistani brides. These farshi pajamas are heavily embellished in kunda, dabka, zari, sequins and zardozi. They are available in beautiful nets also for various occasions.
The designing of farshi pajama is an art and it requires a beautiful mind to come up with the latest ideas and techniques. This Pakistani dress comes in different colourful styles. Movies like Umrao Jaan highlight show noblewomen of Lucknow culture and royal courtesans wearing farshi pajamas.
